Kenya Fly vs Drive $$

A constant in the Kenya posts are people seeking info to get max value out of a safari. With infinite number of combinations available it is near impossible to make a apple to apple comparisons.

There are pros and cons of the fly/drive option. A combination of the two makes a lot of sense. Shoortravel has a very nice "Kenya Road Travel Time" table showing in hours the required time between Nairobi or Mombassa and 10 of the major parks.

Negating lodge or camp, what would the $$ difference be for a 9 day safari Wilson-Samburu-Masai Mara-Wilson?
Safarilink would cost approx $1,300 for two.

A second, broader question would be how much does it cost per day to have your own vehicle driver regardless of destinations?

First of all, you can't do a straight on drive from Samburu to the Masai Mara... just too long, over a day. An overnight somewhere would be necessary. Doubt you'd want to be wasting a day or more in transit!

If these are the two areas only you wish to visit then it makes sense to fly and use the guide/vehicle of the lodge/camp you stay at each reserve. $650*/per person is a good deal for the flights.
*make sure the taxes are included in that figure

If you'd prefer your own guide/vehicle, provided by tour operator, you'd have to pay approx. $180-$225/day. Or you have the option at the lodge/camp at which you stay to pre-arrange for "exclusive use" of a guide/vehicle, but these come at hefty prices, as from $250-$400+/day.

Thanks Sandi,

The question should have read: How much does a guide/vehicle cost per day on avg to travel overland? Your last paragraph answered the question and then some.
