Well, at least it's official now and you don't have to wait until the very last minute to get rebooked!

Patty, have you read anything about Delta's planned flight to NBO? I flew Delta this weekend, and I think I overheard a stewardess mention that those flights will not commence as scheduled.

Michael,
I haven't been following closely but I think I read that DL has applied for daily frequency to CPT as a back up in case they don't commence service to NBO (service was supposed to start in June as 4x weekly to NBO alternating with 3x weekly to CPT).

I just read on FT that DL's service to NBO has been pushed back to a start date of Dec 8. CPT service will commence on Jun 3 as 4x weekly service (up from 3x).

It really was a good flight when it operated.

I am certainly glad they didn't cancel my flight. We took that flight the first week of January - just a week or so after the elections. My family at home was frantic. We were simply frustrated, as we elected to stay in the airport for our 8-hour layover, rather than venture into the city for our Sheldrick visit.

If our flight had been canceled and we had had to call back and alert our family, some of them might have needed medical attention.

I'm glad you went Patty and glad you had a great time, notwithstanding Kenya Airways.

We were very lucky that we didn't miss a day going and we got to try out KQ's 772 which was great! The seats were so much more comfortable than KL (even if we did have to sit in the middle 3 seat section because that was all that was left). Coming back I was less concerned and that turned out fine too. Despite having a double connection, we ended up arriving LAX at the same time as originally scheduled (but I missed the opportunity to shower at CDG). We were offered the KL nonstop from AMS but that would've meant an 8 hour layover in AMS (and we had no winter clothes to leave the airport) so we chose to stick with our original CDG-LAX flight.

Hi Patty:

I just came across this news.

Kenya Aviation and Allied Workers Union has issued a 21-day strike notice over working conditions.

The strike could paralyse air traffic to east Africa’s largest economy, whose critical tourism sector has been hit hard by post-election violence.

The more than 1,600 airport workers said they would go on strike in three weeks over issues of salary, medical coverage and transport.

The union includes fire fighters, security personnel, ground crews and cargo handlers in all eight airports in Kenya.

"This is a warning to flights into Kenya to reschedule within the next 21 days to avoid any inconveniences," said Mr Jimi Masege, the union’s general secretary…

More here and all across the wires:

I was supposed to be on KQ flight from NBO - CDG and ran into the "last minute rebook." UGH!!! Didn't find out about the cancellation until I arrived at the airport. One issue I ran into with rebooking was I was on an award ticket in 1st class. It was a little hairy for a little bit, but they got it worked out, rebooked on KL, still in 1st. whew

Den,
That's all they need! Hope they come to some resolution before the strike deadline.

Shane,
We were also traveling on award tickets in business class. There was never any question that we'd get rebooked into business both times, at least not in my mind

Patty, I can echo that sentiment. One of the first things I told them was I didn't care what airline it was, or what the route was, as long as it was in biz. period, end of story.

Patty, I appreciated your posting about the postponement (cancellation?)of Delta's flights to NBO. Unfortunately, I had a FF ticket with Delta to NBO in September...bummer! Delta hadn't even bothered to contact me about this. Now I'm going to have to either purchase a ticket to JRO (change of plans), or burn LOTS of FF miles for a regular award. Once again, Fodor's is the best place for up to date info!

ShayTay: You need to call Delta back til you get a good agent. We had 2 skysaver tickets on delta in business class and 3 in coach to Nairobi in June. I contacted Delta about a week ago because my itinerary said call Delta. They were very kind and put all 5 of us on another flight to Nairobi at the same skysaver rate even though it was already sold out of skysaver seats. That was 5 tickets!!! So yes - they can do it, you just need a nice agent that will take the time to work with you. Just keep calling back!! Good luck! Ann

ShayTay,
Did you use Delta Skymiles or another carrier's miles for your ticket? Whichever program issued your award should reaccommodate you on either KL or KQ since your original flight was canceled. They should be able to override award availability to get you to NBO. However, since it sounds like you were originally only ticketed to NBO (you later changed plans to go to Tanzania, right?), they may not reaccommodate you to JRO if there's no award availability on the KL AMS-JRO flight.

Re possible strike at Kenya airports... I hear it "might" only be a slow down and wouldn't be the first time this has happened. Right now, it's wait and see.

Thank you, Sandi. Have you (or anyone) ever heard of an airline called "Northern Dene"? Google lists it as a Canadian airline but Ziji.com lists a direct flight from JRO to EBB with it. I'm trying to avoid flying into Nairobi.

If the workers staged a "slow down" at NBO, would anyone notice?

Thanks for the info, Ann and Patty. Ann, what carrier are you on? They told me there was nothing they could do, as they (Delta) weren't flying to NBO and they couldn't do anything on the other airlines. All they did was refund my miles (and, hopefully, my taxes!) What I've done now is use some NWA miles for AMS-JRO and DAR-AMS (only one leg is Saver miles). I then booked a separate ticket, PDX - AMS - PDX, using Delta miles (Saver). It burned a lot of miles, but gets me to Tanzania, given that Delta wouldn't help me out getting to NBO. I'll spend a couple of days in Amsterdam on the way over, which I like.

ShayTay - I am using Delta Skymiles. We are one Delta to Amsterdam and Kenya Airways to Nairobi. Then home from nairobi to Paris on Kenya Airways then to Atl on Delta. You could also fly delta to Paris, London, or Dubai and then codeshare from there. I am sure there are other options too, but I know about these for sure. We had skysaver (fewer miles) tickets in business and coach and they moved all 5 of us to these flights. I think now that they have already refunded the miles there probably isn't anything you can do, but it sounds to me like you got a lazy agent. I am sorry you lost the free tickets!
