We will be flying Kenya Airways from Abidjan, Ivory Coast to Nairobi, Kenya. A friend just made the same flight and said his flight was delayed 5 hours (scheduled to leave at 9pm and left at 2 am). I am hoping to arrange for some sightseeing in Nairobi the day we arrive in Kenya. Should I allow a 4-5 hour cushion in case of flight delays? Is this rather common in your experience?

It happens, particularly as they do not have many "spare" planes if one develops serious technical problems. I have been informed by someone who until recently flew with them dozens of times a year, that this is more likely to happen on routes inside Africa. Flights from Europe are generally on newer planes and known to be more reliable.
Sticking my neck out I would say long delays are not frequent enough to be "rather common" in my understanding of that term.
Thank you. It makes sense that they would use the newer planes for longer flights to Europe, and South African Airlines probably does the same thing. (We have flown with them many times.) Perhaps another way to approach this is to ask, if we hire a guide to pick us up and three others who are coming directly from London, should I allow a two hour cushion for arrival and possible delays or more? We are supposed to arrive around 7am and our friends around 8 am, and we leave for Kisumu around 5 pm, so we should have time to see a bit of Nairobi if everything goes smoothly.
