We packed a lot in our 4 day jaunt through Jordan and can only speak to Petra and Madaba.
In Madaba, we stayed at the Madaba Inn which is right down the street from the Greek Orthodox Church. We could actually see the church from our second floor window. This is where the mosaic maps are.
Also, go to a restaurant called Haret Jdoudna. You can access it by walking south on King Talal Street, about a 10-15 minute walk from the Mosaic Church. Haret Jdoudna is an upscale restaurant and shopping complex. The night we went for dinner, the restaurant was populated by groups, couples and travellers and the meals were not that expensive. I especially liked the cheese somosas (sp?) as an appetizer.
In Petra, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza, which is right next door to Petra. We did not get a guide as we had done a lot of reading up on the site and took our LP guide with us.
Do the monastery (Al Deyr) in the morning as soon as Petra opens. This way, you avoid the heat, esp as you traverse the 800+ steps. You will be rewarded with solitude and a handful of people for at least an hour before the crowds start coming in. Make sure you check out the surrounding trails when you get there.
Great pictures of the site can be had by climbing on top of the rocks on the hillside. There is a hollowed out rock wall where you can sit in the shade and enjoy the grandeur of Al Deyr.
