Is it wise to visit Tunis on our own?
Our cruise ship will be docking in La Goulette for 7 hours. Is it wise/ feasible for us to avoid an expensive shore excursion and instead take a train to Carthage & Tunis on our own when we don't speak the language? Also, will we have any problem getting around Tunis & going to a souk? Is this a reasonable time frame? Should we skip Carthage?

Hi Helen,
I was in Tunisia in Dec and found Tunis very easy to get around, although I do speak French. I really have no idea where the port is from Tunis, but Carthage was easily reached from Tunis by Suburban train. Carthage is very spread out and will involve a lot of walking and take some time. With travel time and seeing about half of it, I spent 5 hours I would say. I think what I would do is go to the Bardo Museum, there are many beautiful mosaics, and then head to the souk, having some couscous for lunch along the way somewhere (the Carcassonne Restaurant was fantastic), and maybe a Hammam if you have time!
I have photos and travelogue at

Have a great trip!

Tunisia is a safe country, even with all the events happening around the world. Carthage is a good place to visit and any taxi can get you there and back relatively inexpensive. fel free to negotiate with the taxi before you go. The people and culture is friendly. have fun..
