Africa is an excellent choice of destination in August. Zimbabwe and Botswana have fantastic places to visit, with wildlife and cultural places in abundance. South Africa is also rich in wildlife and cultural sites.

I agree with Lynda about southern Africa, and I would add Tanzania, especially those parks that you would visit from Arusha (Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti [skip Manyara]). You might check out Ethiopia for weather, although the tension with Eritrea may put such interesting places as Gondar and Lalibela off limits (in which case, I'd wait for another opportunity). P

I am origianlly from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, live in UK now. Yes - August is an excellent time.
1) Not the rainy season, so the bush is not greened up and you can see animals well in the bush.
2) Its not cold and its not yet into the hottest time of the year either (October they call suside
month)
3) Its the cheapest time of the year too.
Fly via Johannesburg to Zim or SA, not Harare - its so expensive that direction.
Game parks in Zim are fairly limited i.e. the biggest being Hwengwe near the Falls, all others are privately owned/run and believe me, they rip Americans off something terrible.
If you want to know anything else - email me.

I am a journalist living and working on the north-east coast of South Africa, and August is one of our best months! It is not as hot and sticky as summer, and the chill of winter has worn off. The Zululand coast, where I live, is tropical, and we have a wealth of things for tourists to do. Within a few hours drive of my house is all of the following: Big Five reserve, beaches, swamps, lakes, birds, animals, Zulu culture - you name it. I live here because this is paradise on earth! COntact me if you want more details
