So I am FINALLY going back to Africa for a Safari. I did TZ in 2006 and to be honest I was way out of my league and had NO CLUE what I was doing. =-) This time around its Kenya and all of its wonders.

I have read the boards and trip reports and LOVED the pics but still had some questions (if you could humor me please)...

1. I am NOT a great photographer but I am very inspired by the photos on here! Any tips or tricks that a novice can try out? I have a Cannon XS30 IS.

2. I am REALLY trying to travel light but I am finding I am still packing too much (I'll be in Kenya from June 8 to 20th -- not a lot of time but all I could manage with work.)

Here's what I have on the list for clothes

1 pr the classic safari type pants that convert into shorts

1 pr of khaki shorts

2 pairs of cotton/yoga type 3/4 pants -- I spent so much time in the car last time that I want to be a bit more comfy this time

8 t-shirts

1 Fleece Hoodie

1 Long Sleeve top

I have gotten all the other clothes down to bare minimum with Ex Officio stock.

--- I'll be in Nairobi for 2 days before starting the safari do I need anything 'dressier' you think?

3. I recently read on one of the boards that you should NOT be handing out trinkets to the kids? I was bringing a bunch of pencils to give out. Should I not do this? I am waiting for a response from my outfitter to see if they plan on visiting a school/village/etc. But I was thinking this would be a good 'gift' when I visit the Massi and the Samburu villages.

4. Any feedback on my accommodations (I know I should have asked this before I booked but oo well)

I leave on May 24 for my 1st time so will be watching this thread closely. 8-)

8 t-shirts seems like a lot if laundry is available all along the way. I'm taking 5 not including the long sleeved T.

Do you have weight restrictions with any in country flights? I am very concerned about the 33lbs!!!

Don't forget binoculars. They're essential.

Also consider looking for a microfiber hoodie instead of a fleece one. It can provide as much layering protection, takes up less space/weight. and dries much faster it it gets wet or if you need to wash it. A zip instead of pullover gives you a bit more flexibility.

Don't forget socks, a scarf and gloves as it can get quite nippy in morning and night... they don't take up much space.

Appears to be a 'group' safari, with some long distances to be covered. Nairobi/Samburu - 6/hrs; Samburu/Lk Nakuru - 6/hrs; Lk Nakuru/Masai Mara - 5-6/hrs; Masai Mara/Nairobi - 5-6/hrs.

Accommodations are fine in the mid-range and June is still at mid-season prices so I'm sure you got a good deal.

You have a camera that will be more than adequate for safari. Just get to know it before you go. Practice on backyard/neighborhood/zoo wildlife so you will be smooth in its use. Extra batteries and memory cards. Such may be available at some lodge gift shops but at consideable price. Maybe a camera lens cloth, spray, etc in a zip lock bag. Pack less clothing as you should be able to get laundry done at reasonable cost at most lodges/camps. Relax. Even while in Nairobi don't worry about impressing anyone with attire. Its your trip.

1. Camera--
Bring more memory than you think you'll need. I bring 2 battery chargers in case something happens to one of them. Are you real familiar with the camera? If not, do some practicing. Take the manual with you.

I disagree. I've never brought that many. Also I prefer a collar for sun protection, which a t-shirt does not have. 2 long sleeved, 2 short sleeved, 1 T-shirt does it for me.

So that is 9 shirts? If you want a long sleeved top, then just bring one blouse.

Not unless you have an activity that would specifically call for something dressier. Do you have any plans?

3. trinkets/pencils
Give the pencils to a school not directly to the kids. If you visit a school, the adults may direct you to hand out the pencils, which would be good. You can also buy supplies in Kenya, perhaps during your first 2 days. If you are on a group safari, making a school supply stop might not work well, but it appears you have ample time.


B. Samburu Simba Lodge
Lots of good bird activity on grounds. Eles can be viewed at the waterhole and roaming around.

D. Sarova Mara Game Camp
I've only visited, not stayed. You can have some nice long walks around the expansive grounds. You can even go fishing.

Back to packing...

I'm sure you are bringing a wide brimmed hat. In addition bring a wool hat or headband for early mornings.

You are aware that laundry services are available at your lodging for a minimal fee. Maybe even free at the camp you mention. That cuts down on items packed.

I also found that I could easily wash items in my sink and they would dry in a day or two. Speaking of quick dry, I take quick dry underwear that really does dry in about 10 hours. I bought mine through Tilley over a decade ago and they have held up well.
