Ideas for day trips from Amman?
I will be attending a meeting in Amman in early November, but will have two non-consecutive days free. I will be going to Petra prior to those free days as part of an event in association with my meetings. Can anyone suggest what I could do for two separate day trips? I am female and will likely be alone. Not sure how it would be to go by myself with a guide. Is anyone aware of any one-day group tours from Amman? Or have a sense of what it would be like to go by myself with a guide/driver? Any suggestions for companies to contact?

You could have your hotel arrange a car and driver and hire a on site guide if you'd like to.
Consider these sights for day trips:-
Umm Qais and Jerash,
Desert Castles,
Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea (this might be along day),
Madaba, Mt Nebo and Bethany beyond Jordan.
Also, consider visiting the Citadel in Amman if you have few hours off work, but check the hours for the Citadel first.

Thank you! Does it usually work out fine to arrange day trips through the hotel, or would it be better to arrange trips in advance? Would I have any difficulties as a single woman? Also, what is the best way to get around Amman to see the sights in the city?

We used an Amman based travel company to organize our trip (including hotels but they also do day trips) - highly recommend them and particularly Bashar Herzalla, our lovely driver.

Here's a link to our blog - you read about most of the above locations there

Do contact Desert Horizons as suggested, but also email your hotel for list of tours/prices offered.
You're perfectly safe traveling with a guide/driver and maybe at particular sites you need to hire a "site-guide" (with a small fee or just a tip). You will find many women in Amman in western attire (even Queen Rania)... not all are covered. But refrain from exposed skin as shorts, halter tops... slacks are fine. Many of their malls/shopping and even restaurants can easily compete with those you'd find at home.
