how to join a Kenya safari once in country
Hi
I am considering doing a volunteer trip in Kenya and want to go on safari afterwards. No company I have found have a tour with dates that match up to mine and I don't really want to go alone. any suggestions

After you get there, visit a few travel agencies in Nairobi.I have always managed to join a safari or have them arrange one for me. Thats what they do. I find it is cheaper then booking in advance from overseas.

You might check with Nature Expeditions in Nairobi. They are a reputable company and might have some scheduled departures that you could join. August is high season in Kenya, though, so it may be tough to find space at the last minute. You might get lucky and find a group with last minute cancellations, though.

Most safari companies in Kenya offer Scheduled departures. During the months of August its usually quite busy because of the annual animal migration at the Masai mara, so there is a very good chance you will get a group to join up with.
I will also echo @luangwablondes in saying you can visit a few reputable travel agencies when in Nairobi and am quite sure you will find most will accommodate you.

Group safaris often depart NBO on set dates, where they visit and type of lodging (from camping basic, to lodges or permanent camps) depending on your budget i.e., 5/day safari departing Sun; or 7/day safari departing Tue. You may just have to wait a day or two before you can head out.

Nothing is more easy than that. Practically each hotel in Nairobi (and elsewhere) and all travel agencies are happy to sell you a safari - starting from one-day safaris.
Safari means that you get a voucher and a flight ticket. You show up at the airport (or another meeting point), meet your fellow travellers, board the plane (usually a very small one) and, after landing, you will be greeted by your guide. Some helpful hands will take care of your luggage and usually you start directly from the airstrip for your first game drive before they drop you off at your lodge and serve you dinner.
The quickest safari opportunity is Nairobi National Park, which is on the outskirts of the city and requires just half a day.
If you have more time, I strongly recommend Masai Mara. A two-night mini safari is already a good experience - you will have four game drives and opportunity to visit a Masai village during daytime. Tent camps are very recommendable.
