How dangerous do you guys feel about flying into the Nairobi airport, spending the night and then taking a shuttle to Arusha?

I don't have a chance since I am using FF miles and my airline only goes there. I can't afford the airline and trip?

Txs.

The Nairobi airport is in Kenya and it's perfectly safe to fly into. I wouldn't sleep in the airport though.

Thanks! I get into the airport around 9:45 and we will be staying at a hotel and leaving on a shuttle for Mt. Killie the next morning! I live in D.C. and there is so much news about the region that I was a little worried although the airlines said they had not had any problems!

Maybe she ment she'll fly Ethiopian Airlines. They fly from DC to Nairobi, with a stop over and connection in Addiss Abba.

Yes, the heading title is a bit confusing.

Most flights arrive Nairobi in the evening, from where visitors overnight at a nearby airport hotel or into Nairobi proper. All very safe. Flight the following morning to JRO, also regularly done.

There's upheaval in Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia. Nairobi, Kenya and Kilimanjaro, Tanzania are fine to be flying into/out of. Nairobi being the major hub city for destinations throughout East Africa and elsewhere around the world.

Do you have arrangements for airport transfer to your hotel and then again next morning? Will you be flying to Kilimanjaro or taking the bus? Your tour operator should be able to arrange transfers regardless which mode of transport.

I am staying overnight as the flight get there at 9:45. Would you suggest the Precision (?) Airlines or the shuttle? I know the shuttle takes a long time - is it scenic at all? What is your suggestion? Also any hotel near the airport that you know of?

Txs.

Hi Roma

I do think Nairobi is as safe as anywhere
But, since you've asked, you must have all the info:
US gov (& Israeli as well, for example) issued an alert on visiting Nairobi (i think since 2002).

you must remember Al-Quaida's past terror acts:
1998 attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania (rehearsals for 9/11 ?)

2002 Mombasa: attempt to shoot down an Israeli passenger plane (& a car bomb in a beach resort where israelis were staying)

i understand (unofficially) that some intelligence agencies assume Kenya still has an Al-Quaida cell somewhere

The closest and newest hotel (10/minutes) to the airport is the Panari www.panarihotel.com/index2.htm

Precision Air/Air Kenya have code-share flights from JKIA/NBO to JRO at 8am and, I believe, a 9:30am flight, next is about 12N... but check their schedule which does change. Flight time 50-minutes. Once cleared thru Immigration and baggage collection you have to get to Moshi/Kili, where I pressume you'll be staying before you commence your climb.

Air will be more expensive than the shuttle, but for the shuttle, you'd have to be downtown Nairobi to make this connection. It's cheaper, by lots, believe $20/person each way. Departures are also early, 8am, arriving Arusha about 12N (if it's on time) but you have to get to Moshi for the Kili climb. Moshi, is about another 1.5/hr drive from Arusha.

Again, your tour operator who is arranging the climb should be able to advise and book your flight or shuttle bus (even hotel in Nairobi) and arrange transfer as needed on both ends.

Whether the bus ride is scenic or not - some might find it is, others not really. Mostly locals and back packers and those looking to save money are passengers and those who have the time.
