Hotel/B&B suggestions for Cape Town

DH and I will be spending 2-4 nights in CT immediately after our LONG flight from the US. We are seniors and do not want lots of steps to get to our rooms. We will not have a car, and want to be very close to a HOHO bus stop. We prefer to stay in a non-touristy area, easy walking distance to bars and restaurants that are patronized by locals, but obviously safety is a concern.

Moderate hotels and nice B&B's (in Europe) usually suit us very well. We're not high end, luxury travelers, but don't stay in hostels, either.

I'm open to all areas, but thinking that the V&A Waterfront area makes sense maybe?
