Hello, hoping someone can recommend hotels in Damascus and Aleppo for my upcoming trip in April. I'm a single female and having a hard time finding a quiet, safe hotel in the $50-$75/night price range. The boutique hotels look gorgeous but are too expensive for a single traveller, while the hostels are too cheap and tend attract a noisier, younger crowd (I'm 42). Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jennifer

I am visiting Syria this May and had similar questions. While I am still looking for a hotel in Damascus, I booked the Hotel Baron in Aleppo, the most historic hotel in that city. They have guaranteed me either the Agatha Christie or TE Lawrence room, and I think it $65 per night. There's plenty of info about the hotel in the internet and all the guidebooks.
Please post if you find an interesting hotel in Damascus.
Michael
How did the Baron work out for you? And did you find a good option for Damascus?
Definitely stay at the Baron -- great location, very helpful, especially Walid who manages the place, historic, nice bar. Walid also helped with travel arrangements, and his son drove me and another guest on a tour to the Dead Cities and Apamea, which are tough to reach by public transport.
In Damascus, I ended up at the Afamia -- very central, about 10 minute walk from old city, excellent rooms.
Both hotels are in the LP and respond quickly to emails. Come to think of it, the LP did not have an email for the Baron, but I tracked that down on the Internet.
Thanks for the info! I'm getting ready to actually buy my air tickets...
