We are planing a 5-6 week self drive trip to South Africa around march 2014. To keep costs down I was wondering if you need to hire a 4x4 to get camping equipment or can you just hire a sedan and still get the camping equipment? We really enjoy camping, but since you don't need a 4x4 to get around South Africa it seems an easy way of keeping costs down.
Hire camping equipment with 4x4

OK, I'm not sure I actually understand your question. You are referring to camping equipment that comes with the vehicle rental? Or are you bringing your own and not sure whether it will fit? I've only ever heard of 4x4's from specialist (read expensive) vehicle rental companies that come with that sort of equipment (rooftop tent, cooking utensils etc) - regular sedans from the likes of Avis, Budget etc definitely don't.
There are companies in SA that rent camping equipment. Then you can hire a car instead of a 4x4. Thats good as long as you don't need high clearance or 4 wheel drive to get where you want to go. I've done this a couple times, including at Kruger.
