We (a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 children) are going to Morocco for 13 days at the end of the month. We are starting in Marrakech then plan to pick up a car from the airport and drive over the Atlas mountains to Merzouga, stopping near Dades Gorge for 2 days on the way out and near Ait Ben Haddou for 2 days on the way back.
I'd love to hear from others who have rented a vehicle. What did you rent? a 4WD SUV? a normal smaller car? Any problems? Especially interested in the mountain drive and near the desert.
Thanks!

Hello
If you want to go to the desert with ur car , u need a 4wd...but if u just want to go and see thes cities , a simple car is enough
We've rented a car in Morocco three times in the last three years. The problem is that although you might use a big name(and we did), the cars are actually provided by a local franchisee.
All (without exception) of the cars that we have had were not new, 6 months old, or even a year old. they had all plenty of miles on the clock but none ever let us down. Bodywork was haphazard and interiors were not cleaned.
Your itinerary and party size demands a fair size saloon to accomodate the luggage alone, so go for a people carrier(is that an MPV in the US?) as a minimum. Boot (or trunk) space won't take the bags in a smaller car.(Depends on the age of the kids). You won't need 4WD for your route.
We just got back from our trip. We rented through Sixt and had a Kia Cerrato. It looked small from the outside, but our luggage fit in the trunk and we had plenty of space on the inside. It was a great car and took us everywhere we wanted to go. It did have some scratches - obviously not new - but those were all marked when we picked the car up and we had no problems.
