Great North Road - Zambia - safety

We're going to be travelling either by private car or post bus between Lusaka and Kasama in July. We see that the Great North Road passes right by DRCongo and if anyone could comment on its safety, that would be great. The CIA advised against travelling in this region, but we dont see much of a choice. Is it better to travel in a private car (with a Zambian friend) or are the post buses just fine?
