Going to Israel end of October. Maybe silly, but what shoes to bring?
I've put this question in the Lounge as well as I don't see a lot of posts about Israel here. But hoping someone can help:
I never really have difficulty figuring out what shoes to bring while traveling but this one's got me.
We'll be in Israel for 2 weeks from Oct 27-Nov 11.
Tel Aviv and Jerusalem: I figure good sneakers for all the walking we'll do BUT. . .
--- Jerusalem: We will probably do the tunnel walk and it's wet so thinking to bring water shoes.
--- Tel Aviv: If it's warm enough we'll swim in the Mediterranean. Not sure if water shoes will be needed as I don't know what the land is like while in the Sea.
Galilee and Golan - Hiking: So I figure sturdier hiking sneakers.
DeadSea - Water shoes again needed? We'll be at Herods in Ein Bokek which has a sandy beach but the salty water....and we'd like to go to the part of the Dead Sea that actually has salt clumps as well.
Sandals for restaurants at night.
I don't want to take 4 pairs of shoes: sandals, water shoes, regular sneakers & hiking sneakers.
Been to Israel? Any shoe advice?

We'll be in Israel October 18th through 30th, and here's what I've decided: Keen sandals that double as water shoes and good for most hiking;sneakers;flats that are good for walking. From Israel we'll be continuing to Amsterdam so I'll probably add in a pair of booties.
Unless you're doing technical, challenging hiking in Israel, regular sneakers should be fine. And I wouldn't pack an additional pair of sandals, because you will most likely find some beautiful sandals and shoes in Israel (including Naot) and you can always buy a pair there :~).
P.S. what's the Lounge??

adlmllr - The Lounge is one of the forums here in Fodors. It's closed to newcomers if that's what you are. Don't ask me why!
Glad to know regular sneakers will be fine especially since we don't do challenging hikes.
Naot - I can buy them here in NY but you never know if I'll get the urge to buy in Israel.

There is no need for hiking shoes. In fact in the summer I hike in Sandals. What kind of hiking are you doing?
Which tunnels are you doing. The Kotel Tunnels are dry. The tunnels at Ir David need a pair of shoes that can get wet. The same shoes can be used in any other water situation you may be in. i.e. Dead Sea, Mediterranean ( beautiful sand beaches, no shoes needed for water)
FYI, Naot Sandals have many more styles in Israel than in the US. In late October you'll have leftovers on sale, but even not on sale they are less expensive than in NY ( and you get back 17% VAT when you leave IF they are unworn! )

Elkaz - Thanks for all your information.
We won't be dong any heavy hiking.
We do want to do both the Kotel tunnels and the City of David tunnels. I guess we'll carry our water shoes with us that day to use at the David tunnels.
Good to know that Naot sandals are cheaper in Israel and there are more styles to choose from. But I will have to buy a pair here to use while in Israel.
How do you get back the VAT?
