Can anyone tell me the best way to get from Jerusalem to Petra, Jordan? Due to the unrest near Eilat, we're hoping to cross into Jordan via the Allenby/Hussein crossing (we already have visas for Jordan). However, we're unclear on the best way to get to Petra from there. Do we need to go to Amman first or can we go directly to Petra from the crossing? And, approximately how much should it cost to get there?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

No one has answered? We crossed Allenby many years ago but Jordan into Israel. I can't imagine getting to Petra except via Amman rather than directly from the crossing since it's a Jordanian site. But I don't really know. Check with a travel guide is my advice asnd remember that is as always a touchy area for travel.
Are you driving yourselves?
If not, and have arranged with a tour operator, they should know the best route.
I don't believe you have to go into Amman proper, but rather once across the border crossing, the road* south to Petra.
*there's a scenic and longer road, or more direct highway to the site.
