I would like to host such GTG. Perhaps in October? I leave for Botswana at end of October.
I live in Azusa Canyon, about 4 miles northeast of where the 605 & 210 meet (between Glendora and Duarte).

Alexsandra (my wife) has a CCAfrica cookbook, so be prepared for the finest in South African luxury lodge dining!
I'll have to break out with some gin & tonics and other safari drinks, as well. Also, I will be making a major push to get the lodges to start serving Margaritas and I am happy to say that I recently dined with the GM of Mateya Safari Lodge and while enjoying Mexican food and some Margaritas and complaining about the lack of Margaritas in Africa, he proudly announced that Mateya DOES, IN FACT, serve Margaritas! So, I will finally have my margaritas in Africa this time around.

We could meet at the Elephant Bar dressed in our khaki's, then we would know who the Fodorites are (ok...just kidding)
Way to step up to the plate Rocco, thanks! You could wear your famous "vest".
Consider yourself counted Kevin!
Good start guys

We posted at the same time Rocco. Good job on the margarita quest.
Now I would require a verbal authorization from Alexsandra that she consented to host this...I know how you guys are just inviting a few guests over for a 12 course dinner!

ShayTay,
I will keep that in mind...maybe Saturday, October 14th??? Let me take a look at the area boxing schedule as I am a boxing ringside photographer...I love the sport and it has taught me a thing or two to better me as a wildlife photographer. Tomorrow night is my biggest assignment, a heavyweight championship fight from Staples Center in L.A. to be broadcast on Showtime.
My article and photos on the press conference for same fight:

Carla...no worries about Alexsandra as she loves to entertain and will have a team of people assisting her, if necessary!

Hey Rocco,
What's happened to boxing? Maybe it's just me, but I started losing interest in prize fighting when the bouts started going to cable TV Pay Per View, HBO, etc. It was just not worth it to subscribe to see boxing. And now even though I do pay to have satellite TV I still won't subscribe to HBO or do PPV. I can not now name even one active pro boxer. Not even a heavy weight, not even the champ. Do you feel the public has lost interest in boxing because of this, or, no just as popular as always? Are not the most popular sports broadcast on "free" TV? Is there not a lesson here?
regards - tom

Dennis,
If you make the effort, I will personally pick you up from John Wayne Airport (about 30 miles away). I think this is about as close as you are going to get to a Fodors Africa Hawaii Get Together!
Tom,
Boxing does not have a dominant personality right now like a Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali. However, there are some great fighters out there right now, including two of the fighters involved in tomorrow's Showtime telecast.
The "champion", James Toney, was the fighter who the movie "Against The Ropes" was based upon with Meg Ryan and Omar Epps. Although Toney started his career as a middleweight, winning the middleweight championship, the super middleweight championship (168 pounds), the cruiserweight championship (190 pounds) and the heavyweight championship, he has never gained the same popularity as some others but it is mostly because he has only been in the heavyweight division for a couple years...trust me, he has all of the magnetism and charisma as a Mike Tyson or Muhammad Ali.
Then on the undercard, at Super Featherweight (126 pounds), there is a great young fighter named Robert Guerrero who is challenging for the belt. This kid is incredibly talented, and although it was a losing effort, here are some photos I took of him last December. He came back to avenge this loss with a lopsided knockout victory:
http://www.fightnews.com/robinett02.htm
(Although this was only the second fight I ever shot, I consider this some of my finest work to date...I do think the black background helped).
On that very same report, the other fighter featured, Paul "The Punisher" Williams is incredibly talented and a 6'2" welterweight (147 pounds). He should win the championship in his next fight and then hold onto it for many years.
One reason for boxings recent demise is that the top heavyweights in the world are mostly Eastern Euopeans and/or from the former Soviet Union. While they are excellent fighters, they just cannot command the spotlight the same way that a Mike Tyson or even Evander Holyfied did while they were champions.
Really, there is not another sport that I enjoy half as much as boxing and I so much respect these boxers as you have to be in world class shape to compete at the top level. Although some consider it violent, I personally consider auto racing and (American) football to be FAR more violent.
Anybody watching the Showtime fight tomorrow night will NOT be disappointed. A fight like this does not come around very often. James Toney, even at 38 years old, is the best boxing technician in the sport and his opponent is a mean 25 year old 257 pound Nigerian who knocks everybody out. Smarts vs. Brawn and I am picking Smarts to win!

Okay Rocco, every time I read about your newest planned trip(s), I get more and more ideas in my head to just pack myself inside your suitcase and look like camera equipment!!@@@ So could you count me in!!!! I am also going back to Bots and Zim in May, and looking for about two additional weeks of ideas- I know that you have more ideas than I could ever afford- so this could be quite an expensive- but worthwhile dinner for me!!! LOL Suzi
