We will be flying into Kilimanjaro airport on Dec 19 and leaving from Dar Es Salaam on the 31st. How is the best way to fly? I can leave from Charlotte, NC or Atlanta. It seems the best price is to fly to DC and then fly Ethiopian Air, but the tour operator I am speaking with says take KLM, but the times are really bad, the layover is long, and the price is a lot more. Anyone have any advise or tips? Thanks

Ethiopian is now flying new 767s out of Wash DC. Price is better than KLM, but you have a stop in Rome (no plane change), then to Addis Ababa for plane change, then onto JRO.
If this schedule and price works better, go for it. Otherwise, KLM is the only other carrier (via AMSterdam) to JRO, arriving about 8:30pm, more expensive. Your choice.
I flew KLM into JRO and the service was great. Personally I'd rather spend a little more and fly KLM than Ethiopian Air.
I haven't flown with Ethiopian, but I do agree with the others who say KLM does a great job of taking care of you. If you went out of IAD with KLM you wouldn't have much of a layover at AMS for the flight to JRO. There would be a longer wait at AMS on the way back. I've dealt with some long layovers the last few years by planning ahead to buy into a lounge if possible. Being able to snack and relax helps ease the pain of waiting around. Good luck, Steve
P.S. By buying into a lounge I mean on a one-time basis. Some lounges will charge roughly $25-30 for a single visit. With a Delta gold credit card through Am Ex you can use Delta's lounges for $25.
The airport in Amsterdam also has a "rent by the hour" Yotel (capsule hotel.) If you've got several hours, it might be worth it to have a place to stretch out, rest and relax.
