Fees for cameras at tourist locations
I've read that many places charge a small fee to use a camera or flash. How is this handled? Is this something they just ask us when we enter the location? Will they let us pay the equivalent in USD or British pounds?

what country are you talking about?
I know that some of the places in Egypt do charge if you take a camera in - altho right now I can't remember which ones.
As for paying - I would think it would be easier if you paid in the local currency.

Outdoors we had no problem taking photos - pyramids, sphinx, saqqara, memphis, bazaar, Luxor and Karnak temples, Philae Island, Abu Simbel, etc. - it was indoor venues where fees were charged.
At the Museum, mummy room, Tut exhibit - a no-no and no fee. At the tombs in Valley of K & Q no-no (nowadays) But, when we visited some years back we could buy, small fee local currency, for 3/pics indoors)... there are guys walking around to be sure you don't.
At Tomb of Nefretari (now closed) you couldn;t even bring the camera inside the tomb.
Best to ask your guide, they'll know current rules as to where you have to pay and how much. Oh, and I remember then, video cameras had a very high fee associated with their use. Buy post cards!

You can "list" a thread under a particular country, but many Fodor's readers look at an entire region at once rather than go to individual countries. That means that unless the country is in the title, we have no way of knowing whether it's Egypt or Zimbabwe. The option to choose a country up front is for the convenience of those who DO wish to select an individual country and filter out the others. But from what I've seen, at least as many readers don't bother filtering - I like reading about an entire region at once and being able to select the threads I want. So yes, it helps tremendously to include the country in the title.

Also - if you select "Egypt" on the drop-down menu when you want to look at posts.....ALL you get are the posts that "selected Egypt" when the post was first made.
If Egypt was not selected at the time of the original posting - then when you pick Egypt off the drop-down meny - it won't appear.
To me - it's a worthless feature. If I want to find all the posts on Egypt, I simply put "Egypt" or "Cairo" into the search box. That usually gets everything for me!

Hi, I just got back from a 3-week trip. Where you used to be able to take photos you frequently cannot any more. For example, you used to be able to take them in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo if you paid a camera fee. Now you can't even bring a camera in. You have to check it in an area that I've been told is not secure - so no point in even bringing it on your visit there. Same goes for all the tombs I was in (Valley of the Kings, Sakkara, etc.) and some temples. You CAN still photograph (for no fee) at Abydos, and in fact it is now lit. Also at the temples that are more open air, like Karnak, the Ramasseum, Luxor Temple, Philae. But not inside places like Abu Simbel - not even for a fee. (You can photograph the exteriors though.) Hope this helps!

We were in Egypt in January and at some locations they wanted a fee for the monopod on our camera or we had to check it at the door. It was about 4 pounds or so - there never was a satisfactory any about why the monopod needed a ticket!
