EXCURSION - HAIFA to YAD VASHEM

Can anybody recommend a company that provides ship excursions from HAIFA to YAD VASHEM (and time permitting, the old city) and back to HAIFA ?

I assume that your ship will offer a day tour of Jerusalem, but mainly the Old City and probably not including Yad Vashem. It is not difficult to go there and back on your own in one day by train & bus, provided it is NOT on a Saturday (the museum is closed anyway). As I said on your other thread - please post all of the details !!

thanks for reply
It's a Sunday and we need to be back on board at 5.00pm
and if there is no time to visit the old city, this is no problem.

I assume that you will be on board the ship on Saturday night .....

The Haifa Center-Hashmona train station is right beside the port entrance. Take the train to Tel-Aviv Savidor Center station. You can check the schedules at:

http://www.rail.co.il/EN/Pages/HomePage.aspx

You can also buy a reserved seat for an extra 5 NIS (these seats are usually in the northernmost car). Get an VERY early start because you have to be back by 5 PM - you have to assume 3+ hrs in each direction!

When you get off the train at Savidor-Centre, you go up the stairs/escalator to a pedestrian bridge that crosses the train tracks and the highway. Walk to the WEST (to Tel-Aviv/Arlozorov) and not east to Ramat-Gan. This is a view of the bridge (looking south - the direction the train is going):

Walk through the train station and through the exit turnstiles (between the two white taxis in this photo):

Walk straight forward (south) for about 30 meters and you will come to the entrance to the Arlozorov bus terminal parking lot (between the tress in this photo):

Walk to the farthest platform in the lot and look for the #480 sign. You can pay on the bus. Buses leave every 15-20 minutes and the cost is 19 NIS pp.

Here is a photo of a 480 leaving the station:

When the 480 arrives at the Jerusalem bus station, the bus will enter a sort of tunnel and everyone gets off the bus. whttp://www.jpost.com/HttpHandlers/ShowImage.ashx?id=240484&h=530&w=758

(The blue bus is entering the bus station. The green bus – which is a 480 from Tel Aviv! – behind the taxi will get there soon.)

Continue walking in the same direction (depending on how many buses there are at the arrivals platform when your bus pulls in, your walk here will be longer or shorter), but anyway, follow the crowds in the SAME DIRECTION AS THE BUS WENT IN. Turn right – with all the other people – and walk DOWN the stairs.

At the bottom of the stairs turn right, past a lot of shops (you are still in the bus station). When you get to the escalators (there is a Fox clothing shop on your left and a bakery on your right), turn left and walk out of the bus station. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. The light rail stop is right there. You want the platform with the trains going to "Mt. Herzl" (not "Heh b'Iyar"). Buy your tickets on the platform (the machine has instructions in English and it gives change).

Here is a picture of the light rail station:

The building on the left, with the big clock, is the central bus station. You will come out of the station just in front of the taxi.

The entrance to Yad Vashem is about a 10 minute walk from the Mt. Herzl station.

Alternatively, you can save time and take a taxi from the bus station to Yad Vashem; it is not a long ride. INSIST that the driver turn on the meter which he must do by law.

Go back to Haifa the same way: take the light rail or taxi to the central bus station, the 480 to Savidor, the train to Haifa Center-HaShmona.

If you leave Haifa around 7 AM you will arrive at the Museum around 10 AM. I suggest leaving the museum around 1 PM if the 5 PM deadline is not flexible. This will give you 3 hrs at the museum which is enough for the main building, Audioguides are available.

I copied and pasted them from several older threads. Your question is often posted by people arriving in Haifa.
