Eilat - Petra and the Dead Sea

We will be visiting Eilat this August. We have planned to cross into Jordan to visit Petra. After two nights in Petra we were going to head back to Eilat, rent a car then drive to the Dead Sea.
Is there a good option for doing this from the Jordan side? We are a family of six and so would need a big car.
It seems that leaving Petra and heading directly to the Dead Sea without going back to Eilat for a car rental would be a good idea but I don't know how we'd manage transportation and border crossing. Where would we cross back over to Israel near the Dead Sea. I haven't looked into this new idea at all so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

The only other crossing is at the Allenby Bridge. You would have to return your jordanian car in Amman and take a taxi to the Bridge, then a taxi to Jerusalem.

Greeting - We will fly into Eilat from Tel Avi. We also will visit Petra via a tour service (suggestion?) Suggestion for hotel in Eilat? The prices seem to be a bit steep. In town or out of town?Returning from Petra would you stay a few days in Eilat or move north to the dead sea/Masada ... And a car rental cheap daly rate so there must be a mileage situation. FA

If you are taking a tour from Eilat, its best to be in town so the tour company can pick you up at your hotel. Try booking with Eilat Luxury Suites, nothing special but its clean, walkable to the beach, walkable to supermarket, near several restaurants and one third the price of hotels on the water. Eilat to dead sea resorts is an easy drive, so rent a car, no drop off charge if you keep the car more than 3 days w/Hertz. So you can pick up in Eilat, play, and return in Tel Aviv for your flight home

Thanks for the recommendations. I will call Hertz again because they are charging me a drop off fee even though I will have the car more than three days.
I have reserved a private driver for the Jordan side. I found him online which makes me a little nervous.

I dont want to scare you, but one of our private drivers in Jordan was HORRIBLE! The whole country is speed traps, and my guy is still speeding, and dangerously too. Every time he gets pulled over, he comes up with a new story to get out of the ticket and him being an ex policeman helped. Still...We only kept him one day, so have a backup phone number for another driver just in case

I called Hertz and they said they do not waive the drop off fee even if I rent the car more than 3 days. Any suggestions?

I wasnt charged a dropoff fee

Per their website

"Location Fees:

Airport service fee – charged for vehicle's pick up and \ or drop-off at the airport.
Eilat drop-off fee – a fee will be applied for one or two days rental period picked up at the Eilat station and dropped off at a different station and vice-versa.
Dead Sea drop-off fee – A fee applies for pick-up at the Dead Sea station and drop-off at a different location and vice-versa."

Eilat was much better than I thought it would be, spectacular really. I only booked 2 nights to take advantage of the Red Sea tours on my waty to Jordan. Eilat is so nice, I would definately plan on 3 or 4 nights if I have extra days the next time

Really, I have decided four day tour for Eilat. But as per your opinion, I need to extend it. I have checked on
http://www.redseaeilat.com/ and http://www.arkia.com/eilat-travel-pa...FVgQjgodvQ0AEQ

May be in the next month I will be there.
