Been around forever and considered very good. I used them a long time ago (long enough that it doesn't me anything any more) and they were terrific.

Egged is a very serious company and has a long time experience in tourism and public transportation.
Some of our friends and relatives, who came to visit Israel, took day trips with Egged and all of them liked them. Small groups, good and informative guides, very good drivers.

In 2005 I took an Egged day tour from Jerusalem to Masada and the Dead Sea.

They had me go all the way to one of the large hotels (I think it may have been the Kind David Hotel) early in the morning to be picked up. I waited, and waited, and they were nearly 45 minutes late to pick me up. We had to phone them to make sure they didn't miss the pick up. After they picked me up, they drove me ALL OVER Jerusalem picking up other people, and then on the way out of town, the bus went about 2 blocks from my hotel. So, I could have easily met them there, but I had 2 hours of this instead.

Then, they rushed us through the tour of Masada, but made sure they took us to the Dead Sea cosmetics place with plenty of time to buy whatever, and then we went to the Dead Sea. Maybe not in that order. We got back around 4:30, I think. Based on MY experience, I could not recommend them. But, maybe it was a bad day for them?

They are the main bus company in Israel. I'm not sure how many companies do this day trip, but it might be worth checking for another one. But, this was back in 2005, so who knows how it might be now.

As said, Egged is one of, if not the largest transportation cooperative in Israel. The quality of its' tours really depends upon the guide and the other participants. No company wants to do things poorly. As tourism is way up in Israel, I don't see the problems that occurred in 2005 happening today. Also, today most of the tours are large bus groups. Some take place simultaneously in two languages. United Tours and Ben Harim tours offer the same trips as Egged--again, luck of the draw in terms of guides. Ben Harim also offers, for a small amount of additional money small group tours. You might want to look into that.
