East Africa best safari seasons travel tips

Jump to last reply

Discussions about wildlife safari destination does not exclude East Africa game parks.

Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya are famous safari game parks to consider when planning East Africa safaris. Wildebeest migration is major wildlife safari event which dominate safari 4 x 4 game drive activities in East Africa. Best time to do Tanzania safari is June to August and December to March, according to wildebeest migration tmovement.

Masai Mara best time for safari is September, October and November.

Uncertain as to the motive or foundation for this post but the use of the generic term "best" sometimes leaves much to be desired. "Best" for what? Price, fewer travelers, likelihood of seeing masses of wildebeest, scenery (green vs brown), what?

We have enjoyed several safaris in northern Tanzania particularly the Serengeti in the first half of May and basically had huge concentrations of wildebeest all to ourselves with no other safari vehicle in sight. Got low season rates, great scenery, clean atmosphere for wonderful pictures, etc.

If one wants to see wildebeest birthing for sure the Feb/early Mar period might be highlighted. However, since the migration is greatly dependent on rainfall and vegetation response I would shy away from suggesting "best". Plus, the Serengeti (including the Ndutu area) is huge so location of camps/lodges might be important to reduce need for lengthy game drives so again "best" needs to be qualified.

And, there is much, much more to see in the Serengeti/Masai Mara besides wildebeest. Thus, "best" can be misleading.
