Driving from Jo-burg to Hazyview

I a couple weeks I will be traveling to South Africa. After a one-night stay in Johannesburg, my friend and I will be traveling to Hazyview to stay one night before traveling into the Sabi Sands game reserve the next morning.

For the drive from Jo-burg to Hazyview, is it worth attempting the Panorama Route? Or should we just take the most direct route? Or maybe some combination of the two?

Thanks,
Kevin

You can't check into your SS lodge until at least 13:00, latest should be 14:30-15:00. So you have all morning that day. If you get up at dawn (you may as well get used to it!) you can see the highlights. It's weather/haze dependent and you can do a "drive by" pretty quickly. But don't be late! You don't want to miss the afternoon game drive.

You don't say what time you leave JNB. You could drive to Graskopt instead of Hazyview. Some people think it's more convenient. I haven't done it in such a long time I can't remember what we did, but we left Hazyview (a really fancy schmancy place) after breakfast, had a driver for the PR and made a 14:00 flight from HDS. So if you leave really early, the timing should be similar as it should take a couple of hours to get to your lodge from Hazyview.

We can leave Johannesburg at any time. I read the drive to Rissington Inn (the place we're staying) is about 4.5 hours. I'm not sure if the panorama route is exactly the route from Johannesburg to the Hazyview area.

Google maps is pretty accurate except in national parks and reserves. I'd leave Joberg early, do the PR and the next morning do things you missed or want to do again. There are lots of websites with good itineraries and timing. Hopefully someone who has done it recently will chime in. Or contact the Rissington Inn - they likely have info they can send you or refer you to.

We've stayed in Graskop the night before going to SSGR lodges, and like the town very much. I don't imagine the drive from Joburg to Hazyview is much different in terms of time. You can easily see some of the main views on the Panoramic Route - Three Rondavels, God's Window - and still make it to the Sabi Sand lodges in time for the afternoon game drive. A visit to the PR is not to be missed IMO.
