Donating Items

A few years ago when I traveled to Africa I noticed that a handful of people had very large plastic containers. I asked one individual about their container and they told me that they were bringing items to donate (and then fill the container with souvenir for the return trip). They told me that the airline does not have a weight limit on the containers.

I'm wondering if anyone has done this before and what company/organization they went though. Thanks.
