To whomever has actually flown the nonstop ATL-JNB Delta flight (on the 777LR) in economy---I am wondering how many meals you are given? Trying to figure out if I should bring additional food. On my e-ticket it just says "D" for dinner but I would think that in 15 hours they have to give you more than just one meal!
we leave next Friday!

Trip Ideas
I've flown the ATL to JNB route a few times but not the Delta non-stop. My memory is that they will give you dinner not too long after you take off and about 1-1.5 hrs before landing I believe they will serve a light meal. In between they may come around offering water/lemonade (don't remember exactly). I usually throw into my carry-on a couple bagels, a little fruit and some granola bars just in case I get hungry. But mostly I'm hoping to sleep between the two meals, so I take something to relax me.
If I remember from one of the photo posts, you'll be leaving soon. Have a great trip. Best, Steve
Duh, next Friday is soon! Looking forward to seeing some of your shots.
I haven't flown the ATL-JNB direction in economy, but I have flown economy in the other direction. I don't really remember exactly how many meals they served, but I don't remember being very hungry. I typically carry some granola bars with me, and maybe I had a couple of those. I hope that helps a little.
Are they still doing the stop in Dakar? I thought I heard they're now flying truly non-stop from ATL-JNB, but stop at Dakar on the way back. That stop on the way to Africa is brutal.
I'm on that flight on Nov 19; I'm more concerned about legroom and seat recline ... in coach. Not expecting much of anything but agony!! Afreeekah is worth it. When you get there!!!
I'm 6'3" and I don't remember the roominess in coach being any better or worse than any of the other transcontinental flights I've been on. I find that these flights are better when there are fewer people on them and I can spread out a little. When they're crammed full--that's when I start getting uncomfortable.
As above, dinner and a light meal (breakfast-type) before landing.
Unfortunately, these days, all flights I've been on have been fully booked! Two seats in coach is a great luxury. I always take an aisle in the middle as the middle middle seats are the last to go, especially when there are just three. I think SAA has a bit more legroom than any other airline in coach. Even just one inch makes a huge difference, but all that entertainment equipment under the seat in front is a huge nuisance. That's where I like to put my feet!!!
Not - looking - forward - to - this - flight!!!
Thanks for the info. I always do bring some granola bars but am glad to hear we will get some kind of breakfast (or more like lunch, I guess!)
Thankfully it is now non-stop BOTH ways, one of the reasons we decided to go with Delta vs SAA. Our flights look pretty packed. Going down, we booked two aisles in the center section and so far there's no one between us, but on the way back we booked an aisle and a window (as there were no center combos left) and now someone is seated between us! I sure hope they will be willing to trade the middle for the window.
I am not looking forward to this flight either

The flight is nonstop both directions now since they changed the equipment to a 777LR.
I'm thinking the airlines have cut back on flights and thus remaining flights are filling to capacity or near it. At least that's the way it was on all four international flights on Lufthansa last Sep, LAX to JNB. All seats filled, no chance of getting a vacant seat next to you. Anyone have something more factual on this???
regards - tom
You will have a dinner and then during the night you will get snacks and drinks. About an hour before landing you will have another meAL.
Good to know. So, sounds like there's not really breakfast which makes sense, as one arrives closer to dinner time--but I think we might bring a bagel or something as a "breakfast" if we can manage it. Thanks.
I took those flights a few months ago. They were packed. At least there was no Dakar stop. But one thing I did appreciate were the snacks you could go grab at any time, sandwiches, fruit, granola bars, I think. You'll be ok..
They keep a tray out in the back galley full of snacks that you can get for yourself anytime during the flight.
oh thanks, that's great to know!
numbat83 and aowens: did you fly in the back?
How tight are the seats in coach?
Is there any space under the seat in front for your feet?
I don't think - and have never heard of - any airline has NO space under front seats for feet.
The pitch might be tight but feet should have sufficient space in any aircraft.
I have flown once SAA from Europe to JNB. The leg space was tight (even considered short people are sitting there, not to mention for our "length" at 1,78m/1,89m) - much smaller than on domestic routes which we flew very often.

Safarimama, have you checked www.seatguru.com? They have seat maps and show which seats have more/less room, which ones don't have space under them due to video components, etc. If you know which aircraft Delta is using on your route, you should be able to find out more about your specific seat. If you don't like it, you probably still have time to change to another one.
I sat in Economy, and it was ok. I think it was a little more comfortable(more room) than the SAA flights that I had taken earlier in the year. I am fairly tall, and I was able to sleep in the window seat. I did use seatguru to avoid the worst seats, and there was definitely enough space under the seat, and good storage space in the bins.
Thanks so much; I feel a lot better. KLM from AMS is the PITS!!!! Worse than Northworst!!!
The plane is 3-3-3 across in economy with individual screens at each seat. You will have a dinner after takoff, free beer and wine throughout the flight and constant waters/drinks along with"middle of the night snacks" which consist of different sandwiches, candy bars,yoghurt,muffins,chips,bananas,peanuts/pretzels and then another meal before you land in Johannesburg which is at their dinner time.
