Dead Sea and non-swimmer

Don't anybody laugh. I'd like to experience the water in the Dead Sea, but I'm a non-swimmer. Can I get in the water nevertheless; is it shallow enough ? I'll be in Jordan side, if it matters.
Thanks.

You can not sink.Have you not seen photos of people literally laying on their back and reading magazine or newspaper while floating in Dead Sea? Strongly suggest you not wear any jewelry nor watch.

I was in the Israeli side of the Dead Sea last year. It was fun. Regardless of your weight, you cannot sink. Actually, it is more fun to "walk" in the water than to lie on the water. I walked quite some distance towards the middle of the sea and the feeling was simply other-worldly. Bring a swimming goggle with you to prevent the salty water from getting into your eyes. Enjoy.

Have only experienced it from the Israeli side, It is very shallow for a long way and I should imagine that it would be the same for Jordan. As others have said , you cannot sink! Just do not panic when you "let go" and lift up your feet as your legs get "sucked up" and you float.

You cannot drown but under no circumstances should you put your face in the water. The minerals will burn your eyes. Also, bring "pool shoes" or water shoes as the sand is VERY hot and the salt deposits in the water can scratch your feet. You WILL go into the water with these shoes. Do not miss the experience where you put mud all over you. Your skin will feel good for days afterwards.

Bring a disposable water-proof camera to get the best pictures of you and your friends floating. You will not want to bring your "good " camera here.

The Dead Sea and Masada were the highlight of our highlight-filled trip to Israel and Jordan. So not miss it.

It is very very very hot there and the water is also very very hot.

I agree -- do not get all nervous when your legs float up! Also, try to get in the water in the shallow part as though you were sitting down in a chair -- you may have difficulty if you can't swim and are in a face-down position.

Another word of advice: not sure if you're a man or a woman, but I wouldn't shave just before going in the Dead Sea. Salt in the wounds takes on a whole new meaning if you have a shaving cut. I also would try to put bandaids on any cuts you already have -- and, of course, watch the eyes!

Have a wonderful time -- what a great trip.

We were also advised not to swallow even a small amount of the water. You will get very sick. Not only did I not put my face in the water, but I also didn't get my hair wet. Some of my traveling companions did, and they had salt caked in their hair for days, despite several shampoos. Enjoy!
