Damascus to Palmyra

We have reservations for one night in Damascus and one night in Palmyra. What is the best way to travel roundtrip between the two? -- rental car or car with driver/guide? About what should be expect to pay for either of these options? Are there guides to hire to see Palmyra, and is it worthwhile to hire one?

We also need to get from Amman to Damascus. What is recommended for this trip?
