My tour company has told me that foreign credit cards cannot be used in Iran. My bank tells me that's rubbish. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Your tour company is correct.
Bit of truth to both points of view but usually a tour company
ploy scam to get you to pay them for everything many scammers
NEVER wire money to dodgy on line companies there have seen
folks losr thousands.
There are not any official services for the internationally known credit cards in Iran. Some Iranian private banks/Hotels do accept major international credit cards these days. Also, some smart businessmen can accept credit cards working out of Dubai. In some particular shops you can purchase some items like carpets, handicrafts, jewels, etc by credit cards like in some major hotels or some other shops outside hotels.
Big Bank or Hotel exchange for local currency wisest
for incidentals particularly in rural areas.
coinmill.com for correct rate varies widely daily
destinationiran.com other good travel tips.
insuremytrip.com comp cover always wise.

Maxwell, you were right. My financial institution has since apologised.
Iran was a wonderful place to visit, by the way. Read my book about it if you like, at www.grahammeale.info
