Credit card use in South Africa

Can credit cards be used to pay for gas at the pump in South Africa?
Are there places that I will be surprised to discover that they are declined?
Thanks

My understanding is that most stations do not take credit cards, so you ought to think about having cash ready for gas. I believe some of the bigger stations will have ATM machines on site. I understand too that some of the stations are beginning to take debit cards.

In any case, make sure you alert your credit card company and your bank (if you're using your debit/bank card) ahead of time that you will be in South Africa to make sure they don't suspect fraud and suspend your accounts.

Right - pay with cash; there are numerous ATMs all over the country, including most service stations. It's also customary to tip the attendants at the stations - a few Rand.

Depends on the gas station. The ones on the toll roads and in cities take credit cards, the ones in little towns might. Gas stations are full serve - we pay with credit inside where available and tip the attendant in cash. Have your tire pressure checked often - the roads can be bad so you want to make sure your tires are in good shape.

Take two different credit cards and two debit cards. Make sure all banks know you are traveling to S Africa. My debit card didn't work (nightmare!!) so call them and then call again right before you leave.

We had no surprises. Most places take credit cards, but pay all tips in cash in Rand.

Have fun. You're going to love it!!

Most BP petrol stations are allowing Credit card, but rather be safe and have cash with you as this is a new development.
