Not sure of the current cost, but petrol is sold by litres, so 3+/litres to the gallon.

Last year '08, the prices I saw right before they skyrocketed to over 100KSh per litre, when usually they were 80-92/KSh per litre. I assume prices have returned closer to the lower figure now that worldwide price for a barrel has decreased.

This was for regular petrol, not deisel, which might be a tad cheaper.

Thanks Tom! We leave on the 28th! Just looking after last minute details, like ensuring that we will have enough cash. I will certainly write a trip report, but I may not be as prompt as some of my fellow Fodorites.

Thanks Sandi! We have budgeted for 100Ksh/litre (for diesel), so hopefully we should be good! Robin

These numbers from December 2008 /January 2009

For gas, its running 16-1700 Tsh per liter. For diesel, we pull through a station and it's 1480 Tsh per liter.

Exchange rate is approximately 1300 TSH to 1 USD.

*PLEASE* drive carefully and try not to drive at night. I saw a bad accident there nearly every week and there isn't substantial medical care as in 1st world countries.

Thanks for the info, Chris - most helpful!

We will not be doing any driving at night - we have set up our itinerary so that we have lots of time between destinations and never have to travel very far in a day. Robin
