Connecting in JNB

We are flying United to JNB, supposed to arrive at 5:10PM. We are trying to decide what time to book a ticket with SAA on to Capetown. Would 6:45 give us enough time or should we go with 7:30? If we book 7:30, do you think we would be able to get on the 6:45 if we are at the gate in time? We will probably have checked luggage. Maybe we should take only carry-ons?

United doesn't fly to JNB; your flight to JNB is operated by South African Airlines. Doesn't matter, though, you still go through immigration and customs in JNB, recheck your bags, then walk over to the domestic terminal for the flight to Cape Town.

1h35m is probably not enough time, and it might not be a legal connection. Much better to take the 7:30 flight.

Ditto. I'd look to the later flight. Sounds like you're already ticketed to JNB, so when you check in for your flight to JNB get your boarding pass to CPT. SAA operates both flights so that should not be a problem. It'll save you time by letting you go from C&I to your domestic flight without checking in again.

On our recent trip to JNB our plane from US was delayed 2+ hours due to weather, then technical problem, then medical issue. The usual long walk to passport control, then 10 minutes in line, then another 15 minutes or so waiting for bags to arrive. Lots of people missed connecting flights that night both on one ticket and separate tickets.

Thanks so much for the advice, everyone. Yes--the flight is operated by SAA. However, the first leg of the flight between Chicago and DC is a United flight. I will probably get my boarding pass for the flight between DC and JNB in Chicago?? Hmm, in that case, I couldn't also get the boarding pass for the Capetown flight. Unless--I could try to get the boarding pass while in DC? We'll go for the 7:30 flight and hope for the best. If things go more quickly, maybe we could get on an earlier flight standby.

Kameo, as far as I understand it you will be flying a codeshare flight from IAD to JNB, i.e., booked through UA with its own flight number but operated by SAA. For sure UA will issue your boarding pass to JNB in Chicago. I still think UA can check your bags through to CPT and perhaps issue a boarding pass to CPT. I'd call UA to ask about the CPT leg.

If your JNB - CPT flight is a separate ticket, I doubt UA will be able to issue a boarding pass. However, if it's an SAA flight and you book to online, you could probably go online and print the boarding pass or get it from SAA in IAD.

Thanks for the info. I'll check with both United and SAA about that boarding pass for our Capetown flight.
