Carla, I was glancing through that issue, looked at the elephant photo and thought to myself, gee that looks a lot like it came from the sequence of elephant photos on Eyes on Africa's site, and sure enough, it was.
Congratulations James!

Wow - this is news to me... I haven't seen it yet.
I'm sitting in Heathrow Virgin lounge just killing time and waiting for flight to S. Africa later tonight and now I have good news, so thanks for the nice words.
Carla, if it is the elie herd running, then the image was made at Rock Pan in the Savuti Channel not far from Savuti Camp in June (2002 I think).
We sat above the little pan there for about 7 hours and watched as endless herds of elies, buff, zebras, warthogs and impala came to drink and bathe. Pretty great day. I was there with Ian Michler and a guide friend of mine named Copper (some here may know of him).
Only one spot of adrenaline when a cow elie snuck in behind us undetected and chased us round the Landie 2 times - I had been squatting and sitting with knees bent for 90 minutes or so without standing and had to get up quickly, carrying my camera and lens (which was attached to my tripod) - I remember Copper laughing after the incident as my knees were shaking! LOL. We all laughed, but my blood was pumping with adrenaline, I'll never forget that one.

That is a funny story James. I don't think I would have been able to get up after 90 minutes~!
After reading 321go's post I had to go digging to find the sequence. It was the "finally they began to run full out, even the little calf.." photo.

Andy and Matt - Thx for well wishes.
Carla - Spending a week with a guide mate of mine in Bots - serious photography and hard-core birding I hope. Then I have a small group of clients joining me for a Digital workshop safari in the Delta and Linyanti. Also a week with family in Joburg. Back home in June!

James, I should also mention that you have one fabulous website. I don't know how you find the time to maintain it but it is superb. So much information...I am always getting "lost" in it. <

Congrats, James! One day I'll get around to subscribing to AG.
Speaking of James' photos (and I don't know if this has been mentioned before) he also has several superb photos in the 2008 African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) calendar.
Some of my favs are May, September, and November. And I especially love
July's photo of the cheetah cub.
Great work!!

LOL...you really need to get one of the calendars. You've got some great shots in there!
You and Craig Sholley dominate most of the photos in the AWF calendar for '08.
I know AWF uses Sholley quite frequently so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw so many of your photos.
If you can't get a copy, let me know. I'll send you mine, that is, after '08 is done! ;-)

Base on a qlook through my old copies, I actually think the selection is largely very ordinary. There are some exceptional photos notably the photos by Thomas P Peschak, and Christophe Courteau. The one saving grace is the absence of the latest fad for out of focus blurred shots or artistic as they call it.
I suppose it is all a matter of personal taste. The readers photos in Getaway and Go! are generally better.
