Violence reported during indefinite strike by taxi drivers in Western Cape province.
One person on 14 March was killed and several others were injured in clashes between taxi drivers affiliated to the Santaco union and the police during an indefinite work stoppage by the former in Western Cape province. A truck driver was shot dead and his vehicle set alight by protesters in the Crossroads area, close to the provincial capital Cape Town's international airport (CPT), while 17 bus passengers were injured after demonstrators threw stones at the vehicle. In addition, a young girl was injured by a rubber bullet fired during skirmishes between demonstrating drivers and the security forces, and two bus drivers sustained injuries and damage to their vehicles after being targeted by stone-throwing picketers.
We have been advised to use private transport from airport for our upcoming holiday.
