Can gay people travel safely in Morocco?

Hi, myself and a friend are visiting Marrakesh in April. Morocco seems like a fascinating country and we are both very excited. I have some concerns though as we are both gay men and I have read that homosexuality is illegal in Morocco, potentially carrying a 3 year jail sentence. Realistically, are we likely to encounter issues in Marrakesh? Thanks in advance for any responses!

My friends in Marrakech are 2 men, a couple who have lived there for decades, have a business and are clearly not hiding. So with that example before me, I see no issues whatever for you. Morocco has long been a destination for people of all descriptions, in particular writers & artists who don't necessarily blend in with the local culture. Go and enjoy Morocco, as many have before you.

Thanks @MmePerdu your response has made me more optimistic! I think discretion may be the key. I'm really excited to go, but want to avoid any trouble!

Discretion is definitely the key. I traveled there as a solo gay man last spring. I behaved no differently there than I would in the USA-that is, my sexual orientation defines me no more so than it would for a straight person. As long as you don't find it necessary to hold hands or show public displays of affection, I don't see why you would have any problems. Just be respectful, as I'm sure you otherwise would.

Discretion is the best policy everywhere, and particularly in more conservative places, having nothing to do with orientation. I think of it simply as well-mannered, for everyone.

Agreed. That is the crux of my point. It's all about manners and respect.

Incidentally, it isn't uncommon to see men in Morocco holding hands. It's a custom for friends and nothing but friendship can be assumed, just a side-bar.

That said, just be sure not to pick up any locals. That would be where any trouble would start.

In Fact, homosexuality is forbidden in most or all Muslim countries like Morocco. As said before discretion is the key. Weather you are homosexual or not try not to expose your love in public, Arab people are in general not comfortable with this and all tourists should respect as it is a part of their culture.

I know in Egypt being a gay female is something tbat can't even be comprehended and thus is not feared as gay men are since "it just couldn't be possible." Not sure about Morocvo.
