Burkina Faso travel tips route tourist attractions photo gallery

I want to share with the community some tourist information and experience of my recent trip in Burkina Faso

A circular route of about 900 miles in 9 days in the southwestern part of the Country , mainly visiting small rural villages , some small towns and some Protected Natural Parks . Burkina Faso astonishes and surprises positively , the diversity of culture derived by the presence of the many ethnic groups living there , makes even better and special this fascinating Country . Gorgeous the architecture of the typical houses which varies depending of the ethnic group prevalent that lives in that particular zone

To see the photo gallery of my trip click on the link below

Below the list of the main places that I have visited ( may be useful to better plan a trip )

> Tiébélé : it is a small and beautiful village inhabited by ethnic group of Gurunsi ( or Grunshi ) , the typical traditional houses are called Sukhala and are among the most beautiful in all West African , the houses are decorated and colored with geometric patterns red white and blacks . To visit nearby the small village of Kampala and the city of Po , are interesting both for the lively and picturesque market

> Bobo Dioulasso : is a very lively and pleasant city with colonial atmosphere buildings , it is inhabited mainly the ethnic groups of Bobo and Dioula ( or Jula ) . It is the greenest city in the Country ; the oldest part is suggestive and very interesting , Mosque with Sudanese architecture style ( or Sahelian ) is the symbol of the city , do not miss the Grand Marchè , the building of the railway station in Neo Moorish style . Nearby to visit the rural village of Soumousso

> Banfora : is a small town not particularly interesting but useful as basis to visit the surroundings

Surroundings of Banfora :

- Niansogoni : is a small village on the border with Mali located at the foot of the cliff where it is located an ancient and beautiful abandoned settlement with housing and typical granaries of the ethnic group of Dogon
- Karfiguéla : are beautiful multilevel waterfalls
- Domes of Fabédougou : is a beautiful formation of limestone rocks shaped of domes and other particular forms that create a landscape really impressive
- Pic of Sindou : are a rock formation formed of pinnacles and other forms very special that create a landscape surreal and breathtaking
- Tengrela : is a beautiful lake where you can see hippos
- Loumana and Douna : are two small and interesting villages inhabited by ethnic groups of Sènoufo Dioula Trouna
- Serefedougou : in this zone the landscape is characterized from the plantations of sugarcane

> Gaoua : is a small town interesting for the lively and colorful market , for the Museum de Poni and it is useful as basis to explore the beautiful surrounding villages inhabited by the ethnic group of Lobi and Dagarti ( o Dagaaba )

Surroundings of Gaoua :

- Kampti : near the border with Côte d'Ivoire there is a rural village very particular , it is very important for religion animist with a remarkable variety of fetishes
- Périgban Sianko Ipele : are 3 small and beautiful villages with typical mud houses of the ethnic group of Lobi

> Nazinga : is a nature reserve inhabited by elephants crocodiles warthogs antelope monkeys and many species of birds

> Ouahabou : the beautiful Mosque in Sudanese style ( or Sahelian ) is not to be missed

> Ruins of Loropéni : are an archaeological site with the ruins of an ancient fortress of gold trade

> Léo : is a small town located near the border with Ghana and it is interesting for the lively market

> Nobéré : is an interesting rural village

> Koubri : is a small village inhabited by the ethnic group of Mossi who live mainly in the central part of the Country

> Sabou : there is a Nature Reserve with a lake inhabited by crocodiles

> Ouagadougou : unfortunately I did not have time to visit the Capital

Other locations visited : Labola Kassianra - Boromo - Yakranyimasso - Pa - Sissili - Darsalam - Houndé

--------------------------

Under my daily itinerary :

- day 1 : arrival in Ouagadougou

- day 2 : Koubri - Pissi - Nobéré - Tiebele

- day 3 : Kampala - Po - Nazinga

- day 4 : Sissili - Léo - Gaoua

- day 5 : Kampti - Périgban - Sianko - Ipele - Gaoua

- day 6 : Loropéni - Ouo - Sidéradougou - Labola Kassianra - Banfora

- day 7 : Niansogoni - Loumana - Yakranyimasso - Sindou - Douna - Tengrela - Banfora

- day 8 : Karfiguela - Fabédougou - Serefedougou - Darsalam - Bobo Dioulasso

- day 9 : Soumousso - Houndé - Pa - Boni - Ouahabou - Boromo - Sabou - Kokologo - Ouagadougou

- day 10 : arrival at home

For this type of path I recommend the use an off-road because there are several hundred km of dirt tracks , some in good condition others too difficult for a normal car

This was one of the most interesting trips I made

What gorgeous photos ! I haven't finished looking at them yet. If I were younger, I'd make a trip there. I became interested in B.F. when it was called Upper Volta. At the NY World's Fair of '64 I bought a red, white, and black handbag decorated with cowrie shells from there. I still have it.

Wow - those are some fabulous photos.

I've been following someone on Instagram who was just in Burkina Faso and it looks fascinating. I love the mosque architecture which is so reminiscent of Mali.

We are just back from Sudan and this is certainly somewhere we'd love to travel, can I ask you did you use a local agent and if so would you recommend them?
