Burj Khalifa, pre-book or not?

We are planning a trip to Dubai in October and are curious, do we REALLY
have to book a ticket in advance to go up to Burj Khalifa?
I know there is an official Burj website but we see other sites that sell tickets cheaper.
Should I steer away from those sites?
I understand there is a certain amount of time one has to spend waiting on lines but is there a limit to the time we can spend up top?
We want to be there when the sun goes down.

Thanks

I booked our tickets through the official website http://www.burjkhalifa.ae/en/ and picked them up at the desk in Dubai Mall. I bought tickets for the Observation Deck (level 124), not the Sky Deck (level 148). You can stay and walk around as long as you wish.

If you want to be up top at sunset, make sure to start queuing at least one hour in advance. For October this means a timeslot at 4:30 pm at the latest. FYI, we have been queuing for more than an hour ... unfortunately we were too late for the sunset (had a timeslot at 5 pm in November).

Buy your tickets as early as possible (1 month in advance).

What is the difference, besides the altitude, between Sky deck and observation deck?

Thanks

Mainly the price!! 125 vs. 500 AED. At Observation Deck you walk around with hundreds of others ; at Sky Deck you can sit in the lounge and you are offered coffee and dates. Probably priority entry, too.
I don't think you see more or have better views from the 148th floor.

MyriamC - Checked that website, I see you can only book six weeks ahead. Someone said they were there at 9 a.m. and it was quiet. What is your suggestion? Will be there early September. Thanks

Sorry for my belated reply but I was on holiday. I think any time is good but if you go in the evening you can enjoy the fountains show afterwards. And you don't have that burning sunshine in the evening.

"do we REALLY have to book a ticket in advance to go up to Burj Khalifa"

In short, yes! I bought a ticket when the date I wanted went on sale so I was able to get the time slot of my choice. Fast forward to the day I went up, it was so crowded and people were asking the ticket for time slots that were available that day, on this particular day one time slot was left and that was the last time slot for the day. If you're determined to visit the top, book in advance.

This might be interesting for Dubai visitors: the viewing platform on level 124 'At the Top' is now also open Friday and Saturday morning starting before sunrise. You can be booked online as usually. Price seems to be the same as the standard daytime tickets.
