Wondering if you could help us - we usually like to visit an orphanage or school while we are away - and bring gently used clothes, toys, school supplies, etc. What is the protocol for this in Namibia and what do you suggest?

Contact the lodge(s) where you will be staying. Ask them for assistance and/or advice. Many places are happy to help guests bring items for the local community.

I recommend that you use your money to buy goods locally in Namibia to then give to the orphanage or school. That way your money supports local businesses by buying from them. Even better if you buy locally made goods (and not the imported stuff...).
I agree with Mike - work through the lodges to minimise unintended negative consequences.
Other possibilities are:

Thank you for all the much thought out advice. This is a very complex issue and a very difficult subject to approach. It is very easy for us to want to offer assistance in every way possible. After all it is in our nature to practice compassion.
The company we have planned and booked our trip through has been top notch in answering, responding and providing everything from detailed itineraries -directions, phone numbers, maps, cell phones -and didn't hesitate to address this question/request.
They suggested similar advice/readings and even reminded us of how a portion of our investment is directly donated to the charity organization they help support - Empower Women in Africa. This charity is unique and an issue I never thought about until brought to our attention, something really to look at (www.empowerwomeninafrica.com)
