bringing shoes , crocks, for children on safafi with us...

My wife ,78 year young mom ,our youngest daughter and I are traveling to Kenya and Tanzania this Saturday for a trip of a life time. We have read other posts from many other safari travelers on what to bring to give away...So we brainstormed that we would bring 40 pairs of children's crocks shoes....do you know how big a duffel it takes to pack 40 pair of crocks in? So we have an extra duffel, it only weighs 14 lbs, no problem getting it to Nairobi, we used 3 years of air miles to fly up front...my question is ...how can we find the right group to give the shoes too. We don't want anyone to benefit from these shoes except the children that will wear them, not a guide with a private agenda, I know its incredibly poor country(s) , we are just looking to give the whole duffel to an orphanage or something/someone similar. we are traveling with A&K Hemingway safari and we are all over the place in both countries, does anyone have a suggestion at to where we can deliver these children's shoes? thanks much

You might try calling this group to see if they could use your donation.

Interesting choice, but you do know that 40/pr will never be sufficient for the many needy children. Besides, many children there already wear "croc-type" sandals, whether purchased there or as gifts from visitors. Just so you're aware. And, in the end... best gift is cash, so what is needed can be purchased locally to enhance their economy.

Is there any place on your A&K itinerary where you'll be stopping at a village or orphanage? If not, and depending on where staying along the way, know that many of the camps are affiliated with a Masai or Samburu or other tribe's village and this can be a good place.

40 pair may not suffice for every child. Nor will 67 minutes unite the world. But...it is a step in the right direction.
Good for you, Dave! Good luck and safe travels.

Just to reiterate what sandi is saying, your motives are absolutely nothing but the best. However, many of the crocs will be sold, inevitably, and repurchased by any local who has spare cash to pay for crocs at the local market rate. That's the reality of free handouts.

Money is the best giveaway, or at least purchases made locally for specified needs. Local shoemakers (the car-tire soled sandals are brilliant) will be missing out on 40 sales, sadly.

Hoping this message doesn't cause offence!
