For the USA readers of this forum.....

Quick update.....Bob Woolmer was the coach of Pakistan at the on-going Cricket World Cup. He is a South African with a British Passport.....

Anyway, he was found brutally murdered in his hotel room during the world cup in Kingston, Jamaica. Speculations aplenty......but, they have not found the killers yet. Pathologist report says manual strangulation!!!

He was murdered the morning after Pakistan lost to minnows Ireland. That's the equivalent of an NFL team (top tier team like Pats, Eagles etcetc)losing to a college football team in the USA. So, something fishy....

Not that it really matters Hari, but for the record Bob Woolmer was British, although born in India. (Bet you didn't know that?!) And in the many reports after his death, one quotes him as saying of himself that he was the "typical British bulldog".

However he had very close ties with South Africa. He married a South African, his home was in Cape Town, and he was also a former coach of the S.A. cricket team, before Pakistan. (He resigned in 1999 after the infamous Klusener/Donald run-out World Cup tied game against Australia, that saw them miss out on a semi-final place.)

He recently co-authored a soon to be released book on cricket and sports science, with the world-renowned Professor Tim Noakes of the University of Cape Town and more recently the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. (Woolmer's third book I think.) And he was planning a Cricket Academy in Nelspruit.

HariS, Thank you for informing us Fodor's followers from the States who are not familiar with cricket; I am so very sorry for the loss of a much revered coach, and all the players and fans who are mourning him. Having recently lost my father I can only say I know the sadness and pain his family and friends must be going through..and to be so horribly murdered in itself is a travisty. I do hope someone finds out what happened and when they do it will be reported on this forum. I feel for all those involved on these posts who live and breathe cricket - I read the posts with a smile as everyone seems truly passionate about it. Thank you for taking the time to explain the significance to those of us who are not involved in the sport. My sincere condolences. D.
