Big 5 close to Cape Town?

We are first time visitors to South America and will be in Cape Town for 11 days this December. Do you have any recommendations for seeing a Big 5 safari that would be driving distance from Cape Town?
Any other highlights / suggested destinations are welcome! Thanks for the advise

Around Cape Town it is not a natural habitat for the big 5 & as such not a real safari experience, for this you need to go to Port Elizabeth.

I'd take a short flight to Port Elizabeth and rent a car there. Parks in the neighborhood:

- Addo, of course. Has been seriously enlarged a few years ago.
- Shamwari, east of Addo. Been on the telly recently as a series on Animal Planet was thot there. I think it was about that guy trying to make their rogue lions get accustomed to gamedrive vehicles. Note that Shamwari is split in two sections. The smaller section, in the east, with Bayethe Lodge on it, may not be the best choice as you probably need to drive to the other part every time, to see most animals.
- Amakhala, which basically lies on the other side of the highway, opposite of Shamwari. With the exception of two small parts that lay east and west of Shawari, and contain two lodges called Amakhala Safari Lodge and Carnavon Dale, respectively. Same remark as Shamwari; perhaps better to stay in the bigger part.
- Lalibela, a bit further east from Shamwari.
- Pumba Game Reserve, east of Lalibela
- Kwandwe, even further east (between R344 and R67), owned by &Beyond.

All the above are big 5.

I'll add a last one that lots of people often forget; Samara Game Reserve. That one is in North of Addo. You can get there by going east from Port Elizabeth and then take the R75. Samara is in the Great Karoo, and thus very different from all the reserves mentioned above. No big 5. In fact; no lions, no buffalo, and no elephants. But a better chance to see species that live in dryer habitats. They even have Brown Hyena!

Enjoy South Africa!
