Bidair at JNB

In a recent trip report on South Africa, the author mentioned having a company called Bidair guide them through the JNB airport to their gate in the domestic terminal for their flight to Capetown. Only a small fee involved. I would be very interested in this for our upcoming trip. From what I've read, JNB is not very easy to negotiate in a timely manner. Can anyone give me some more info?

JNB is a small airport. Very nice since the refurb for the a World Cup. One terminal, one area to check in, good signs (in English), no problems. If you can't find your way, just ask at an info desk. Not sure who told you it's difficult - it's not. Plus there are many very helpful people who, for a small tip (I usually give R50 or USD5) will take you anywhere in the airport you need to go. They are not scary or trying to rip you off, just trying to make a buck.

There are ATMs and banks (good signage) in the airport, the car rental and taxi areas are well marked. The hotel shuttle area also has good signage, along with the Gautrain. Really, no worries - and it's very safe. I have never even felt a little uncomfortable. Much easier than most US airports.

I agree -- very easy airport to get around in and always someone available to give directions.

I totally agree with christabir and kathbc. Very easy to navigate. I've never had a problem or felt unsafe. I have gone thru there MANY times and even the first few times were of no issue. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks. Your responses are different than ones I received when I asked how much layover time I should allow to catch my flight to Capetown. We are arriving at 5:10PM and our Capetown flight leaves at 7:30PM. It sounded like this might be a rush. I thought there were two terminals--one for International and another one for domestic flights. We would have to find our way to the domestic terminal and check in after doing all the arrival stuff. I like the idea of just paying someone to guide us if we are very short of time.

I've never had problem finding my way around JNB. If it makes you more comfortable, go ahead and get a guide. Sometimes a guide "knows people" and can slip you by some "inconvenience". A few extra $$ is always appreciated. FWIW, On our first safari, 2005, we had a "meet and greet" arrangement at JNB - but - no one was there!!

regards - tom
ps - after you get your luggage you will be asked by several fellows to help you with your luggage. If at that time you feel in need of assistance, hire one of those fellows? There are luggage carts, free use.

Yes, there are two terminals, international and domestic, but they are now connected. However, there are multiple levels and it can get a bit confusing as to where to check in, depending on your airline. There are plenty of porters around that will happily guide you to where you want to go for a small tip.
