Best place to get good airfares to South Africa from the United States

My son and his wife are going to have a second wedding ceremony in Cape Town and it will be on January 2. Since we are travelling all that way and it will be our first trip to South Africa we would like to stay a couple of weeks but have some time constraints as to when we can travel. We can leave the US on either December 19 or 20 and have to be back in the country by January 6 at the latest.

I am finding airfares that are at least $2400 (we would fly from PIT, CMH, CRW, CLE)
We each have 90,000 + miles on Star Alliance. I did call them last night and got someone who so clearly did not know what they are doing. They were able to find one ticket with some wild connections in Germany with ten hour layovers

I know this is the worst time of year to hope to get decent fares but just wondering if anyone knows of any agents I should check out or just keep plodding through websites. I will try using miles again but am not holding out much hope for that

Thanks for any help
Pam

Try kayak.com for a broad ranging, easy to use, easy to read air search. Call Star Alliance again.

South African Airways is offering a 2 for 1, $1799 from NY or Washington DC to Johannesburg. Good through March 31, 2011. This would be a good deal only if you could get to the gateway city cheaply enough, and then from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Would your 90,000 miles work to offset getting back and forth from the gateway city or the rt Johannesburg/Cape Town?

Just thought I'd throw this out there for what it's worth. Good luck--and what a beautiful place to celebrate a marriage.

Sorry. The address listed above will just get you an email screen to contact SAA.
Try this phone number 1-800-722-9675 or find their website by googling it.

Kayak is showing $2,221 if departing PIT 20th Dec, returning from CPT 4th Jan. With 2/stops going and 3/stops returning. Continental out, British and UA on the return. Unfortunately PIT isn't a hub-city, so these stops.

Traveling over the Christmas/New Year's holiday isn't likely to be cheap regardless where going.

An update - we were able to revise travel dates. Are leaving 12/24 and returning 01/11 - got a fare on Vayama.com for $1590 including taxes, departing from Charleston WV connecting in Atlanta and then to Johannesburg. Not bad Now I will be posting about help for time there Thanks

FWIW, for fun did kayak search, CRW-JNB, same dates. Came back with Delta and KLM flights, through ATL and AMS, $1381 with orbitz. http://www.kayak.com/r/PvBTu-

This is a LOT different route than your original leaving from PIT going to CPT. Nice to be flexible
