Best Layover from NY to Cape Town

I will be going to South Africa in October/November 2017. We have booked the land portion as well as the internal flights in SA. Our tour begins on a Monday so am looking for suggestions as to where to layover for a couple days en-route. We can leave the Friday prior spend a couple days & then arrive in Cape Town on Monday.

My travel partner has been to London several times so does not want to repeat this.

Suggestions?

Are you completely flexible on stopover points and/or airlines? Usually stopovers en route to South Africa raise the airfare price, sometimes significantly.

Personally, I'd go for Amsterdam, as it's a very easy "soft landing" point, the airport is very convenient to central A'dam, everybody speaks English, and you can practice pronouncing Dutch words so you won't be thrown by printed Afrikaans when you see it. Plus it's a terrific city.

Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and I would look at them in that order.

What are your interests? Depending on which airline you fly, the easiest route would be to spend your stopover at the hub that you would be going through (Amsterdam if you are flying KLM, Paris if flying Air France, Dubai if Emirates, etc.).

I'm flying JFK-CDG-CPT in December and stopping for a few days in Paris on the way home to break up the trip. I mainly chose that routing because I like to fly Premium Economy on Air France - to me, it's a good compromise between not wanting to spend all those hours in coach but not incurring the expense of business class.
