Hi,
We had the same reservations when we booked our balloon ride over the dunes (we were staying at Little Kulala).
Afterwards we were so pleased we'd gone ahead and splurged, as it was one of the highlights of our trip. Absolutely breathtaking and totally unforgettable.
The sight of the dunes changing from dusky pink to blood red as the sun rose was incredible. And as well as flying up high, we also came down low - in fact we were so close to the dunes at some points that we could reach over the side of the basket and touch them.
Mind you, it *was* our honeymoon; perhaps we wouldn't have spent so much money if we'd been on an "ordinary" holiday. All I know is I don't regret it one bit!

If budget is not keeping you from enjoying a longer safari, then I would say to go for it with the balloon ride, even though my own balloon ride was less than memorable (never getting more than 50 ft. off the ground).
However, if your budget is an issue to a longer safari, then I think you would be better off using that $400 pp to extend your safari by a night OR by using it to upgrade your camps.

It was worth it! I threatened to go by myself if no one else would go with me, so DH and the three boys agreed to go. Watching the change in color and contrast on the dunes as the sun came up was unbelivable. Our youngest, who on our last balloon trip curled up on the floor of the basket and went to sleep, was entranced!

hi
it depends which country you are in and the season, if you are in the East Africa during migration then its worth it, if its in the low season then its not and in kenya its 385USD the last time i checked.
but as you were adviced earlier if you have the cash why not but if you dont then use the cash to extend your holiday
