For me, the hardest part of arriving somewhere is getting from the airport to the hostel. Can anyone tell me the procedure for taking the city bus in Dubai? Is one "carry-on" suitcase allowed? Is exact change needed? Must it be in coin? Is the fare variable according to destination? Any chance the driver will speak enough English to help me out? Thanks for any advice

will they speak English? Yes ..... and you ask for directions like you do anywhere else - London, New York, Chicago or LA. No different ......
Here's what I found out: Most people use coins, but the driver collects them, not a machine. He will make change for a small bill. Forget entirely about the driver speaking any English at all, and your pronunciation of even the most well-known places will not be understood. The newer bus shelters have pretty good maps, though, and the bus is fairly easy to use. You can bring a suitcase on board. Beware: the buses are heavily used, and fill up quickly. When full, the driver will not even slow down at the subsequent stops. If you are down the line, you may be there quite some time. Also, the clientele does not believe so much in standing in line and waiting in turn to get on. It can be a shoving match. But it's a good ride for 66 cents.
