Airfare to Nairobi next August, is this price ($2,517.11/pp) reasonable?

I received a quote from Consolidator Webfares for $2,517.11/pp. Here is the itinerary.

NW 151T 22JUL SNA/MSP 745A 125P
NW 756T 22JUL MSP/DTW 305P 551P
NW 54T 22JUL DTW/AMS 710P 905A

KL 565T 01AUG AMS/NBO 1015A 720P

KL 566K 13AUG NBO/AMS 1010P 530A+1
KL 603K 14AUG AMS/LAX 810A 1020A

I have look online but couldn’t find anything cheaper. I called Continental, the agent said that if all the cheap fares were available, it would be $2,284.61/pp but it is not, so it will be over $4,000/pp. They all said the same thing that the cheap seats from Nairobi to Amsterdam are not available, not sure whether KLM has not release the seats yet or some one block them all.

Should I wait? Is there a chance that the price will come down?

Check www.kayak.com

There are fares as low as $1900, via Emirates Air, once you get to JFK on American West.

next fare is abut $2,100.

Pretty good from the West coast in high-season.

Sandi, I was on Kayak searching for fares, unfortunately, I need to be in Europe from July 23 to August 1. I can’t route through Dubai, I can either route through Brussels or Amsterdam. The search on Kayak yield nothing on either cities when I do multi-destination search, but the price for two round trip; Orange County to Brussels/Amsterdam and Brussels/Amsterdam to Nairobi come out to around $2,400.

And Sandi, I would like to thank you again for your valuable help on my Safari itinerary.

Dave, who did you book with? I would love to get that price or close to it.

Thanks Pat, it was a pleasure.

Considering the fare from NYC in August is about $1500-$1600; from mid-west about $1700-$2100; then from the west coast what you appear to be seeing/found is about right.

Can you find better deals from LAX. Or from SNA a good fare to the East coast, i.e., JRK or EWR for flight to AMS.

I am going to wait a bit to see if the price comes down. I will also try leaving from different cities in the US, I have some ff miles that can get me there.

Even if the ticket price goes down $200, that's a $600 saving for me. Thanks.

Dave, please let me know whom you book your trip with. Thanks.

I always thought that perhaps I was paying more going from Vancouver - and I don't know if it was the high season or not, but in June we only paid 1800.00 CDN pp Vancouver-London-Nairobi. That was the price in regular economy before we added the World Traveller Plus upgrade, which was an additional 1100.00 CDN pp.
I booked the tickets in Nov 2005 (5-6 mos beforehand) through a regular Travel Agency. He really searched for those fares though, he took the whole morning to make sure he had the lowest for me.

Thank, Lynda, I think I am trying to book too far in advance, maybe the trick is to wait until closer to my travel date. I am just too excited about the trip, can't wait to have everything arranged.

If you don't mind flying through London, I'd call Kenya Air. They partner with Virgin to London and then fly from London to Nairobi.

Hello,

I'd second the idea of flying through London - the carry-on restrictions should be eased as of next week, and the flights are quite reasonably priced (and have many fewer connections). You could fly LAX-LHR and then LHR-NBO. The LHR-NBO leg should be about £450 ($900).

Cheers,
Julian

Thanks, Lucia and Julian,
I went on to the Kenya Airways web site, they only have reservations and prices through June, but the prices were pretty good, $1,013 r/t Amsterdam to Nairobi. The Continental r/t tickets from Orange County to Amsterdam is around $1,200. So.. if the Kenya Airway prices stay the same for August, I will be able to get tickets for the whole trip down to around $2,200. I will keep checking the KA site for August tickets, thanks a bunch!

Hi Pat,

I'd recommend looking at other airlines as well. Using www.SideStep.com, I found non-stop flights from LHR to NBO on BA in June 2007 for $650.

Cheers,
Julian

Thanks Julian, I will keep checking...

Dave, two more weeks, lucky you. Have a good trip. Would you please give me your travel agent friend's contact number? I don't usually use travel agents, but you never know. Thanks.
