african safari and R&R

planning to travel round the world summer 2007 westward from asia then africa...based on our preliminary itinerary, we can "only" hit two african countries...first, kenya, thinking of one week safari (dont want to rough it) definitely masai mara and ending on the coast to indulge in R&R beachside...any recommendations? thinking about going to zanzibar afterwards...any ideas?

When will you be in Africa? That can help with advice.

Suggest Tanzani and then Zanzibar. There are travel warnings for Kenya.

Do you need to stay on a westward travel pattern or can you backtrack? Where will you be heading after Africa?

If June thru mid-July, than Tanzania in the Western Serengeti is a good bet. You'll be able to catch the migration as the wildebeest herds head into the Masai Mara in Kenya.

From mid-July thru Oct, then the Masai Mara is the place to be.

From either Kenya or Tanzania you can do the beach on Zanzibar or Mombasa. Both areas offer varied accommodations at all budgets.

As to Travel Warnings for Kenya, these are reissued every 6/months (since 9/11/01, if not longer) by the US Government, for apparently no reason than travelers should be aware of wherever they are traveling anywhere in the world these days. In fact there is a travel warning for most countries in the world.

Be mindful, but don't let this inhibit your "need for travel."

I may be wrong, but when I checked ITN, Kenya was taken off the travel warnings/advisory.

But, it also could have been a older issue since I don't read them in the order that they are delivered.
