advice about getting from airport into Livingston

We have almost completed the planning stages of our trip through Malawi, Victoria Falls and safari at Sabi sabi this July. We are a family of 4, including 2 kids, 17 and 13, and will be staying at the Jolly backpackers hostel in Livingston for 3 days . I understand it is 3 min walk from the main bus station.Has anyone stayed there?
Has anyone had experience getting from the airport into Livingston itself? Is it better to take a taxi or the bus? How far out of town is the airport?What currency should I expect to use?I believe that the visa is only payable in US dollars and our hostel is in US dollars as well. My understanding is that we need a visa but that the hotels don't provide it any more and that we need to get at the border or in Washington DC. Can anyone clarify? If we plan to do an elephant ride and view the Falls only from the Zambian side and travel on the bridge, do we just need a one entry visa?
I would appreciate any advice!
